Fort Family: Common Species

If altitude equals excellence, Sergei Parfenov’s top floor shop is the right place for his uncommonly stellar work. Below is our conversation with Sergei, and photos of his work. And a look at his space at 2050 S. High St.

What is Common Species?

Common Species is modern-focused custom furniture design and fabrication shop proudly located in Columbus, Ohio at The Fort. The approach is very much quality over quantity with every piece/project being unique.

Why is being a Maker important to you?

The word important is probably not the right one for me. I'd say it's something that just feels natural and makes sense to me internally. I come from a background in design, so having a problem to solve, besides just making something pretty and well-made, is particularly satisfying. I work primarily with wood but learning and working with new materials is also something I get excited about.

Why did you choose The Fort?

I Initially got interested in the Fort because of proximity to my house. And once I came by to look around, it really clicked. I like the atmosphere of many people working on different things, the history and the aesthetic of the buildings. There is an energy present throughout.
